Dangers of Cell Phone Radiation Acknowledged By Italian Court

The link between prolonged exposure to cell phone radiation and negative health effects has become even more apparent with a recent ruling by an Italian Court. Robert Romeo, 57 years of age, was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in 2010 that resulted in the removal of his acoustic nerve and loss of hearing in one ear. Romero linked the cause of the tumor to the excessive demand his work placed on him to use his cell phone.
“I had no choice but to use my mobile to talk to colleagues and organise work – for 15 years I was calling all the time, from home, in the car.”
With the assistance of a medical examiner that estimated the amount of damage done to his overall bodily function to be 23%, Romero was able to make a case that was strong enough to receive a favorable ruling in court. The court ruled that INAIL, an Italian institution that protects workers in the event of physical injury or occupational disease, was to compensate Romero to the total of 500 euros per month.
Though it can’t be proven with certainty that Romero’s prolonged cell phone usage was the primary cause of the tumor, the ruling helps set precedent for future victims of cell phone radiation. He estimates that his work required him to be on his phone for three to four hours a day. What is truly alarming is that this amount of usage is far from uncommon, particularly among youth. Children and young adults have higher rates of cell division, more soft tissue, and higher concentrations of water in their body, which are all factors that leave them more susceptible to the negative effects of cell phone radiation.
Scientific studies of cell phone radiation continue to conclude that cell phone usage does not present any notable health risks to the user. Cell mutation can take decades and advancements in cellular technology are happening at such staggering rates that these studies are simply not capable of keeping up. Higher bandwidths, increased data rates, and new modulation schemes all pose new questions about their effects on the body. Not only that, but these studies are often so focused on statistical analysis and coming to a specific conclusion that they fail to take into account the whole picture.
This case gives new hope for an increased awareness of the threat that cell phone radiation presents to our future. Progress for the sake of progress is no longer an option. Implementation of new technology without an understanding of the risk is irresponsible, and threatens the lives of our children. Their futures are worth protecting.
